WEEE registration/EAR registration
The WEEE Directive (applicable to the entire European Union) defines WEEE as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive (2002/96/EC), which refers to discarded electronic and electrical equipment. The term "waste" is defined in detail in Directive 75/442/EEC and modified in Directive 91/156/EEC.
Scrapping actually refers to all categories of products in Annex I of the WEEE Directive, even if the product has not reached the end of its service life, as long as it is discarded by consumers, it is considered waste.
1、 Which products require WEEE registration?
6 categories of products: temperature exchange equipment, screens, monitors, and devices with a screen area greater than 2500px2, light bulbs, large devices (with an external diameter greater than 1250px), small devices (with an external diameter less than 1250px), and small electronic communication devices (with an external diameter less than 1250px)
2、 Why register for WEEE? When did WEEE start to be required?
The rapid development of information technology has brought comfort and convenience to humanity, but the waste of related electronic and electrical products is increasing day by day. In order to properly handle the large amount of electronic and electrical waste, maintain, protect and improve environmental quality, protect human health and use natural resources reasonably and prudently, while recycling precious resources. The European Union passed two directives in 2002 that have a significant impact on electronic and electrical equipment products, namely the WEEE and RoHS directives.
In addition to the European Union, countries around the world are actively formulating environmental regulations in order to minimize the harmful substances in waste and require manufacturers or suppliers to shoulder relevant responsibilities in order to reduce the impact on the environment.
Like VAT, the UK and Germany were the first countries to implement the WEEE directive. All electronic product manufacturers in Germany were required to register as early as 2005.
On April 24, 2016, the German environmental department issued a law specifically targeting e-commerce, requiring Amazon to notify overseas e-commerce platforms to register for electronic device recycling. Before obtaining a WEEE electronic device recycling code, Amazon must order merchants to stop selling.
3、 What are the consequences of not registering for WEEE?
1. The product has been removed from the listing by the sales platform, resulting in sales damage and product backlog;
2. Being blacklisted by competitors may result in legal action, punishment, and destruction;
3. Repeated warnings were ineffective, resulting in inspections by various countries and store closures by AMZ.
